Destination guide to Santander, the main port where Ferries to Spain arrive
Flush to the Cantabrian Coast, Santander welcomes visitors to northern Spain as a major hub for ferries, trains, and buses. But this doesn’t mean Santander is a place to run through to catch a connection out. With its lively city center, powder-fine beaches, and historical landmarks, Santander deserves a pause and a look around.
Along the shoreline Paseo de Pereda offers a pedestrian walkway for visitors to stretch their legs, take in the fabulous beach, or people watch at a café. Further out on the bay, sun bleached sands welcome newcomers to sunbath, boat, or surf. Close to city center, Bahia de Santander is the most protected of the beaches. Head to the eastern side of the bay and you’ll find Playa del Punta. Opposite that, Playa de la Magdalena is a great spot to watch the sea and catch up on some reading.
In the city, visitors can see the Cathedra on Plaza del Obispo Jose Equine y Trecu. Actually made of two thirteenth century Gothic churches, they sit on above the other with a twelfth century crypt below. For history buffs, head to a number of museums in the area including Museo de Bellas Artes, Museo Regional de Prehistoria y Arquelogia, and Museo Maritimo del Cantabrico.
After a full day of sightseeing, find a tapas bar, a simple bodega, or fine dining restaurant back at the promenade on the harbor or within the city center. Visitors can choose from a wide array of styles and perhaps watch the sunset sampling some of the fresh seafood for which the city is famous.
